Millstone Employees Volunteer to Improve Nature Preserves in Lyme

More than 40 volunteers worked hard yesterday, clearing brush, building benches, an overlook platform, and a boardwalk in nature preserves managed by the Lyme Land Trust.

More than 40 volunteers from Dominion's Millstone nuclear power plant in Waterford spent Thursday working to improve nature preserves in Lyme. The volunteers, who hail from all over Southeastern Connecticut, tackled five projects.

  • Clearing out invasive winged euonymus from a field and trail in the Pleasant Valley Preserve, which is owned by The Nature Conservancy and managed by the Lyme Land Trust.
  • Building a boardwalk to protect a wetland on the Green Trail in the Pleasant Valley Preserve.
  • Building three benches as rest stops for hikers in the Pleasant Valley Preserve.
  • Building an overlook platform on a beaver pond in the Land Trust's Beebe Preserve.
  • Repairing a 19th century stone wall in the Beebe Preserve.

The community work day was organized as a cooperative project between Dominion Resources, Inc., the Virginia-based power company that owns the Millstone plant, and the Lyme Land Trust.
