After-School Activities At Lillie B. Haynes Go On As Planned

The East Lyme elementary school announced last week that it would have to suspend after school activities because of security concerns.

Last week, Lillie B. Haynes Elementary School sent an email to parents announcing it would be unable to offer after school activities until the spring, because of East Lyme Board of Education policies regarding safety concerns that all outside vendors be fingerprinted.

On Friday, however, School Principal David Miko sent a second email revising that suspension. With the support of School Superintendent James Lombardo, Miko announced that after-school activities would now be available beginning on February 4.

"We will provide proper supervision of all of these wonderful programs to ensure that children are learning from a safe and enjoyable experience," Miko wrote. "We consider these activities highly enriching as they provide students with opportunities that they might not experience during the typical school day."

If you want to sign your kids up for these programs, the deadline to register has been extended to January 29. I wondered that myself when I looked at it, then noticed that lots of our local farmers marketsRead More aren't on the map. When I dug a little deeper, I noticed that all the markets the state lists are "self-reported" in other words, markets have to let the state know and then they're added.

As a parent of 2 children that attend NCS, I do not think the elementary school is the best place toRead More relocate Coastal Connection to. I feel that beyond my concerns, my children may feel threatened or uncomfortable in a school with kids that are so much older than they are. It just doesn't seem like this would be the best decision for any of the children that would be affected by this change.
