Katharine Hepburn's 'Paradise' Home Hits the Market
Catch a glimpse of the former home of one of Hollywood's most iconic stars, in Old Saybrook, Conn.
The former home of Hollywood's leading lady is taking center stage.
Katharine Hepburn's 8,300-square-foot home, tucked on about an acre and-a-half of pristine coastal property in Old Saybrook, Conn., is listed for a cool $14.8 million. That's a steal compared to the $30 million price tag it previously had.
Hepburn called the home her "paradise," according to the Hartford Courant. She had it built in 1939, modeled after a design she put together using a set of building blocks from F.A.O. Schwarz.
The Oscar-winning actress spent summer weekends there until moving in full time when she retired. She died in the home in 2003 at the age of 96.
Boasting 680 feet of waterfront on the Long Island Sound, the home is located in the highly desirable Fenwick section of Old Saybrook.
"Fenwick, a community of 83 homes, was established in the 1600s and is located where the Long Island Sound meets the Connecticut River," the property listing on Zillow states. "The private community is known for its golf course, swimming and boating."
The property's panoramic views have been preserved, too, as the home abuts a 3-acre preserve that Hepburn established.
The house also underwent a complete renovation in 2005.
"Bringing to bear his experience restoring some of New York City's greatest landmarks including the Pierpont Morgan Library & Museum, St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Guggenheim Museum, [developer Frank Sciame] oversaw the project which included raising the structure five feet to protect it from the Long Island Sound."
The house is appraised at $11,171,900 and last sold for $6 million in 2004, according to Vision Appraisal's online database.
The Courant reports that it is currently owned by a developer, Frank Sciame, and his wife, Barbara. Town records list the owners as Two Seventy Three Water Street LLC and Fenwick Acquisition LLC.
