Three Die in Head-On Collision on I-95 in Old Lyme

A fatal car crash caused by a wrong-way driver on I-95 Southbound at about 10:30 p.m. and ensuing crashes on I-95 Northbound closed the highway completely for four hours last night.

A car driving the wrong way on I-95 southbound at Exit 70 in Old Lyme led to a fatal accident that killed three people in a head-on collision at about 10:30 p.m. last night. The accident led to additional crashes on the northbound side of 1-95 because other drivers were distracted by the scene.

The driver who caused the initial crash was the sole occupant of a sedan vehicle and was flown by Lifestar helicopter to St. Raphael/Yale-New Haven Hospital in critical condition.

All three occupants of the sedan that was struck head-on died in the crash. Police have not yet released the names of the victims pending notification of the families.

Police say the accidents on the northbound side of the highway were minor but succeeded in stopping traffic. The multiple vehicle collisions closed both the northbound and southbound lanes of 1-95 at Exit 70 for about four hours. The highway, which is now clear, reopened at about 2:30 a.m.

At this point, police don't know why the driver was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway. Crime scene investigators were on the scene for several hours collecting evidence last night but the accident remains under investigation.

Just heard on the Noon news that three people killed were women from the Branford/North Haven area, I believe. One was a 63 year old woman, with her mother (91) in the car, and a family friend (71) in the car with them. The driver of the other car that was driving the wrong way, is a man (51 years old), and I believe they said he is from R.I. I cannot believe this happened. So, so scary, and so sad to have happened near the Holidays. We should all say a prayer for the poor families of those who died, they must be devastated to lose their loved ones. Their holidays will never be the same...

I wonder if alcohol or drugs played a role in this accident. And why do people go the wrong way on the highway? Do they get confused? Perhaps a study should be done to look into this.

Thanks for updating the story, Gloria! It was a very sad incident indeed. As to whether or not alcohol or drugs were a factor, Corey, police couldn't yet say but there have also been a number of accidents recently that involved drivers with medical conditions that affected their ability to drive and, as the driver in this case was from RI, he may not have known his way around and got onto the highway on the wrong exit ramp. Police are asking any witnesses to call (860) 399-2100 as the investigation is ongoing.
