East Lyme Police Seek Man Who Exposed Himself To 11-Year-Old Girl

The family of an 11-year-old girl who was approached by a man on her way home from school yesterday want get word out to families in Niantic in hopes of catching him.

East Lyme Police are on the lookout for a man who allegedly exposed himself to an 11-year-old girl as she walked home from her school bus stop in Niantic on Wednesday.

"We live off East Pattagansett Road and halfway up our hill a car was waiting," said the girl's father, Jason Arruda. The driver spoke Spanish and told the girl he didn't speak much English but needed directions to New London. When she looked inside the vehicle, Arruda said, she saw the driver had his pants down around his knees and was masturbating.

"She was hysterical," Arruda said. "She ran."

Arruda, who was home at the time, said he and his daughter drove around Niantic to see if they could spot the vehicle. Although they weren't able to locate it, he said, they were able to narrow down the type of vehicle it was. At that point, Arruda said, they went to the East Lyme Police Department to report the incident.

Arruda's daughter described the man as about 40, Hispanic with a darker complexion, a grown out crewcut, and scruffy beard. He was reportedly driving a gray colored, early model car, along the lines of a Buick Century.

Fortunately, Arruda's daughter was unharmed but she was still too shaken to go to school today. Arruda said he has informed the school of the incident. Arruda has been sending emails to local media and posting about the event on Facebook to help spread the word.

"We're trying to go as public as we can, just to make everyone else aware of the situation," Arruda said. "I think it's something that should be taken very, very seriously. Hopefully, we get this guy caught as soon as possible."

Anyone with any information should contact the East Lyme Police Department at (860) 739-5900.

My sister lives in the same neighborhood and a similar car stopped and watched her 5 yr old son, when she came into view the car sped off! She reported this to the police. We all need to be aware and keep our eyes open. Report anyone or anything that looks suspicious. Lets catch this creep!

The car pulled right up along side of her, so she didn't actually get too close, he invaded her space. Also Melissa thank you for letting us know of your sisters incident, because we were not made aware of this by the police when we reported it. This is obviously a truely disturbed man who needs to be stopped one way or another!!

If you are like me & now worried about your middle school student, you can register them for a FREE Child Abduction Prevention & Self Defense Course. The course will take place at the ELMS gym on Thursdays (2/28-3/21) from 3-4 pm. Call ELYS at 860-739-6788. A ELYS registration form is required by 2/15. The course is only open to 35 students so hurry if you are interested. I registered my daughter this am & there's still plenty of space. Please share with anyone you know who may be interested & a special thanks to the Arruda family for sharing their story. Knowledge is power & it really does take a village to raise children, especially in today's world!

This is just so scary. We recently moved to Niantic, I have a nine year old daughter. I'm so glad nothing worse happened, and my heart hurts for your daughter seeing what she did.
