Car Fire in East Lyme Last Night

A driver with car trouble pulled into the parking lot on Pennsylvania Avenue as smoke started coming from the dashboard.

This dramatic picture was snapped by Brett Pias last night, who happened to be in downtown Niantic when a car burst into flames.

It happened on Thursday at about 10:10 p.m. East Lyme Fire Marshal Richard E. Morris said the driver of a 1997 Chrysler Sebring was having trouble with the car's transmission when he noticed smoke coming from around the radio in the dashboard.

The driver pulled over into the parking lot at 22 Pennsylvania Avenue and called 911. Both the driver and a passenger were able to get safely out of the vehicle before it burst into flames.

Morris said it took East Lyme's fire department about 15 minutes to put out the fire, which destroyed much of the passenger side of the vehicle. The fire was contained to the vehicle. No one was hurt.

Is this related to the accident that occurred on Green Valley Lake Road friday night in which a driver ran off the road, hit an electrical box, continuted across the adjacent property's front lawn, continued through thick bushes, swerved back onto the road, continuted across the road, jumped the curb on the other side of the road, then finally gained control of the car and hopped back onto the road and sped off? This accident happened around 10 pm the same Friday night, Sept 6, 2012. They left behind a white passenger side mirror and most of their undercarriage, but in the morning all the evidence was gone.

I don't believe there's any connection. In this instance it was a driver with car trouble, a problem with the transmission. I'll see what I can find out about the Green Valley Lake Road accident though.

Thanks for looking into it. Your car would have "transmission problems" if you ran off the road, over a utitilies box and over numerous trees....

I've been living on Spring Rock a short while and despite the (relatively) high property values, I can't say I'm particularly pleased with the neighborhood. My car was broken into twice in the span of a week, with a few hundred dollars worth of property missing.
I saw the ruts through the yard Saturday morning and was wondering what had happened. Did you contact the East Lyme police dept or decide that it wasn't worth it? I didn't file a full report on my break in, but did let them know that an incident had happened so that they are aware.
