Concerts at Waterford's Harkness Park, Picnic Contest by Bee & Thistle

This annual event is presented by Bring Back Our Music Inc, and encourages picnicking.

It's time for picnicking and all that jazz at 5:30 p.m. at  in Waterford. Thanks to the non-profit organization Bring Our Music Back Inc. this is the second year of the second edition of concerts at the historic Waterford park, which encourages all who come to picnic.

The best picnic contest will be judged by Old Lyme's Bee & Thistle Inn. The concert series previously ran from 1984 to 2004, and would draw thousands of people to picnic while enjoying the show.

Bring Our Music Back secured a five-year contract with the State of Connecticut in 2011 to bring the concerts back, and last summer's two shows again brought out thousands of people. This year, concerts are every Thursday at 5:30 p.m..

The theme this year is “music the way it was.” The Temptations Revue kicked off the series last week. The Legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band is playing tonight, Don McLean is playing on August 15 (make sure your picnic includes a pie!) and The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra will end the series on August 23.

Tickets are $24 in advance (buy them here) or $30 at the park entrance, and $125 for a VIP ticket. It is cheaper to buy a ticket for all four shows at once, or to buy in a group of 10 or more.

The shows run from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. each night. There will be awards for the best picnic. The Garde Arts Theater in New London will be the venue if it rains.

I wondered that myself when I looked at it, then noticed that lots of our local farmers marketsRead More aren't on the map. When I dug a little deeper, I noticed that all the markets the state lists are "self-reported" in other words, markets have to let the state know and then they're added.

As a parent of 2 children that attend NCS, I do not think the elementary school is the best place toRead More relocate Coastal Connection to. I feel that beyond my concerns, my children may feel threatened or uncomfortable in a school with kids that are so much older than they are. It just doesn't seem like this would be the best decision for any of the children that would be affected by this change.
