A Short List of Sandy Hook Charities And How They Spent Donations

After the tragedy at Sandy Hook, 69 charities sprung up. Of that number, 43 responded to a request from the Attorney General to voluntarily provide information regarding their mission and how they've spent the money.

Last month, Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein sent a letter and short survey to 69 charities either registered with the state Department of Consumer Protection, or publicly identified as having accepted donations related to Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The charities were asked to respond by April 12. In all, 43 charities responded to this voluntary request. Rubenstein said his office would be following up with the 26 charitable organizations formed in the wake of the tragedy that did not provide information.

The charities were asked about their organization, services and funds, including the dollar amount of any donations and pledges to date; and the purposes for which money was being collected.

“Our offices may reach out in the future to all the charities to determine how the donations were expended and the steps taken to prevent fraud or misuse of funds,” Rubenstein said.

The survey results are available on the attorney general's website, as well as the consumer protection department's website.
