Seaside labyrinth walk

Natural elements create ecumenical labyrinth

NIANTIC – Beach stones and driftwood will be pieced together
on the beach at McCook’s Point to create a labyrinth that is expected to be
walked by people crossing many faith traditions. The labyrinth, which is being
built by Niantic Community Church, will be put together on Saturday, April 19 just
in time for the Ecumenical Easter Sunrise Service held a 6 a.m. on April 20.
The labyrinth is an ancient prayer path that is a metaphor for the spiritual
journey and can be found in community buildings, churches, parks, prisons and
many places throughout communities.

            Last Easter
was the first time members of NCC gathered to construct the organic labyrinth
on the beach located at 8-10 Atlantic St., Niantic, and the sacred path was
left in tact, and used by the East Lyme and Niantic communities for several
weeks following the holiday. This walk is part of an ongoing effort by the
church’s labyrinth ministry to offer sacred walks throughout the year in a
variety of ways.

            World
Labyrinth Day will be celebrated on Saturday, May 3, when labyrinths around the
world will be open for communities to share in a unified walk at 1 p.m. NCC
will again present a program at the seaside labyrinth where information and
refreshments will be served. In the event of rain, the walk will take place
indoors at NCC on it’s portable canvas labyrinth.

            Following
the ecumenical worship service Easter morning, NCC will offer a hearty pancake
breakfast sponsored by the youth ministry until 11 a.m. A free will offering is
requested. NCC opens its doors for Easter worship at 9:00 a.m. and 11:15 with a
communion service at 7:30 a.m. The church is located at 170 Pennsylvania
Avenue, Niantic. Visit www.NianticCommunityChurch.org
