Company: Old Lyme Full Of Recycling Rule-Breakers

Willimantic Waste Paper Co. Inc. is reporting that an inordinate amount of Old Lyme residents are throwing trash in their recycling bins.

It looks like Old Lyme residents need a lesson in recycling.

Willimantic Waste Paper Co., Inc., the company that handles the town's recyclables, reports that there is "an unusual amount of prohibited items in the recycling collected from Old Lyme," according to the town's website. In other words, residents are throwing their non-recyclable trash into their recycling bins.

In 2011, the town went to a single-stream recycling program where all residents were given a green bin for recyclables, to go along with their blue bin for trash. The problem is that too many people are throwing their non-recyclable items into green bins.

Now, the Old Lyme Board of Selectmen is considering doing something about it. Their first step would be reminding people what they can and cannot throw in that green bin via a mailing and other means, according to The Day. If that doesn't work, Selectman Arthur "Skip" Sibley, Jr. suggested fining residents who throw their trash in the recyclables bin, according to the newspaper.
