Rabid Raccoon Found On Flanders Road In East Lyme

For your own safety, don't approach any wild animal and if you had any contact with this raccoon today, please seek medical attention immediately.

A rabid raccoon was found in the area of Flanders Four Corners in East Lyme today. Ledge Light Health District confirms that the animal has been tested and was found to be positive for rabies on July 19.

"This animal was found in the parking lot of JR's shack/Rite aid pharmacy," Waterford-East Lyme Animal Control Officer Robert Yuchniuk posted on Facebook. "Before I arrived, there were several citizens around trying to help, taking photos and trying to give him drinks of water. I am not sure if they had any physical contact with the animal. If you were one of these people or if you know any of these people, please SEEK IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION. also if you see any wild animals that appear ill or injured, DO NOT APPROACH THEM. rabies is 100% fatal to EVERYTHING if not treated in time."

That's just the latest animal to test positive for the dread disease. Two raccoons tested positive for rabies in Waterford in May and in April. For your own safety, please avoid feeding or approaching wild or stray animals.
