The Daily Five: It's Election Day—Don't Forget to Vote!

Five things you need to know for Lyme, Old Lyme, and East Lyme, Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012

1. Today will be much the same as yesterday, sunny, clear, and chilly with a high temperature of just 46 degrees and an overnight low of 36 degrees, according to www.weather.com. Make the most of it though, because the National Weather Service has issued a coastal flood watch and high wind alert for Wednesday starting at 2 p.m. until Thursday at 7 a.m. when the Nor'easter is expected to blow into town.

2. It feels as if this election season has been going on for eons but, barring any hanging chads, it should be all over tonight. And after everything the candidates have said and done, it boils down to just one thing: your vote today! Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Local polling places are as follows:

3. In the last week before the election, East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica's campaign for the 2nd District Congressional seat against incumbent Joe Courtney was effectively grounded by Hurricane Sandy.

After spending a relatively sleepless week managing the crisis and trying to get CL&P to restore power to the town, he made one final effort to reach everyone last night with an automated phone call urging people to vote for him. His message? "Together, we can return commonsense and main street values to Washington."

4. East Lyme and Old Lyme have rescheduled Halloween! After asking parents to keep their kids at home because of the danger posed by downed powerlines and dark streets on October 31, East Lyme has designated this Saturday, November 10, as the day to Trick or Treat.

Old Lyme, meanwhile, has decided to hold its traditional trick or treat down Lyme Street on Sunday starting at 4 p.m. The Town Hall meeting room will be open and serving hot chocolate and apple cider, and all the businesses will be handing out candy. The Lymes' Youth Service Bureau has also rescheduled its parade along Lyme Street for Lyme and Old Lyme children up to 2nd grade for this Sunday.

You may have to stock up on treats but the good news is that, because it's technically after Halloween, all those big bags of candy are on sale!

5. As of 10 p.m. last night, 4 percent of Old Lyme remained without power, the Old Lyme Emergency Operations Center was still active, and the town was still under emergency orders. Residents experiencing problems post-Hurricane Sandy are urged to call the EOC at (860) 598-0120.

The town is also asking people to call the center if they know of areas that may have unstable trees in and around roadways and power lines. (You'll probably go to voicemail but messages are checked regularly and someone will get back to you with assistance.)
