Sewer and Water Rates Going Up in East Lyme

East Lyme's Water and Sewer Commission approved rate hikes at last night's meeting, effective November 1.

The East Lyme Water and Sewer Commission last night approved a 5 percent hike in water rates and a 3.5 percent hike in sewer rates.

Rather than raise rates in a big way every couple of years, Sewer and Water Commission Chairman, First Selectman Paul Formica said the commission's philosophy is to mete out small rate hikes incrementally.

The minimum water useage charge for a maximum of 3,500 gallons over a six month period is now $44.98. The charges are based on metered readings taken at six month intervals.

The minimum six-month charge for connection to and use of the East Lyme sewer system, based on metered readings, is $5.94 for every 1,000 gallons or $148.52 for a six-month period for unmetered useage.

The cost of applications for permits to connect to the sewer or water system is $100 for residential units, $200 for multifamily and commercial use, $500 for industrial use, and it's $50 to disconnect from the system.

Commissioner Joseph Mingo noted that these hikes are, in part, tied to capital improvements that will result in new meters being installed, "which is going to save us money in the long run," he said.

The new rates will go into effect November 1, 2012.
